With a spreadsheet of monthly energy costs dating back to when they built their Bloomington, Indiana, home in 2001, Paul Mayer and Darla Myers know first-hand how much money Thermocore SIPs save.
“There’s a definite advantage to building with Thermocore panels,” Paul said. “The high R-values, coupled with fewer thermal breaks, add up to a tight, well-insulated shell that worked out great for us in terms of comfort and the resulting energy costs.”
Paul and Darla built with Thermocore structural insulated wall and roof panels. As a result, for the past decade-and-a-half they’ve enjoyed cozy indoor temperatures without stressing their bank account.
Even the worst winter weather proved no match for Thermocore SIPs. When they lost power for 18 hours a few years ago, “The outdoor temperature dropped to a low of 11 degrees below zero, but the temperature inside the house never fell below 50 degrees,” Paul said. “No frozen pipes!”
Over the life of their 3,400 square-foot home, Paul and Darla’s forced-air furnace has used an average of just 527 gallons of propane per year. Electricity for central air conditioning, as well as hot water and appliances, averages only 1,029 kilowatt hours per month. Without their Structural Insulated Panels, Paul knows they’d spend much more.
